Divided by a Common Law: A Comparative Perspective on British and American Commercial Litigation

The program will focus on organization of the legal profession and litigation in the U.K., with particular emphasis on the roles of solicitors and barristers, litigation strategy in a fee-shifting regime, important differences in commercial and contract law of the U.S. and the U.K., and lessons for the U.S. legal system and its litigators.
The program will be held in the Ares Auditorium, Room 164, from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, November 9. Professor Jean Braucher will moderate.
John DeStefano '07 is an associate at Snell & Wilmer in Phoenix, where his practice focuses on commercial litigation. In 2012, he was one of only two Pegasus Scholars selected annually by the American Inns of Court to visit the U.K. and learn about the British legal systems.Hosted for six weeks by the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, DeStefano spent most days in barristers' chambers and visiting with British courts and judges. He received his A.B. in Classics from Harvard College in 2001 and his J.D. from the University of Arizona in 2007. At the College of Law he was senior managing editor of the Arizona Law Review and received the award for the highest academic achievement in his graduating class. He served as a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona before joining Snell & Wilmer in 2009.
