UPCOMING EVENTS

Greetings,

This week, Marc is in Lima, Peru, helping a UA team launch a new micro-campus. As has been tradition over the summer with Wildcat Wednesday -- Letter of the Law, sometimes other members of the Arizona Law community write an edition.

Today it's my turn. I've had the chance to meet many of you in my year and a half leading alumni and development efforts at the college. This summer, I hope to meet many more!

Arizona Law Director of Development Megan O'Leary with alumnus
Mike King ('79) at this year's Steve Hirsch Gutter Bowl.

Last night, the Arizona Law alumni and development team and the Law College Association hosted the college's annual Steve Hirsch Gutter Bowl. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this one of our best Gutter Bowl events yet!

Not a surprise in the least, attendees had a great time -- we share more photos below. In the process, they helped to support current and future students, like rising 2L Philip Gough-Stone, through the Steve Hirsch Scholarship Endowment.

If you were unable to join us for Gutter Bowl this time, you can still give here. And, we hope to see you this summer at upcoming Arizona Law receptions in Denver, Hawaii, Los Angeles, or Albuquerque (stay tuned for details). We'd also be delighted to see you in Phoenix at our June 27 reception in conjunction with this year's State Bar of Arizona Convention or at our August 5 Phoenix Career Mixer

Finally, let me add a personal note to any alum or friend of Arizona Law: If you'd like to meet with me to get more involved with any of our exciting Arizona Law initiatives or just learn more about new faculty, our wonderful students, or upcoming lectures and workshops, just give me a shout at moleary@email.arizona.edu or 520-626-1330.

2019 Gutter Bowlers Strike it Rich ... for the Steve Hirsch Scholarship Fund

Arizona Law's annual Steve Hirsch Gutter Bowl was held last night in Scottsdale, with teams facing off on the lanes and raising funds for the Steve Hirsch Scholarship Endowment.

The Gutter Bowl is now in its 12th year. In 2017, the event was renamed in honor of our late alumnus and frequent emcee, Steve Hirsch ('80), with proceeds going to the scholarship in his name.

Around the College

Professor Carolyn Williams Recognized for Work on Legal-Writing Tool

The Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) recently recognized Associate Professor of Legal Writing Carolyn Williams with an Outstanding Service Award.

Carolyn chaired a task force to advance familiarity with and use of the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation as a tool for teaching legal citation format. The ALWD Guide generates the exact same citation as the Bluebook, but was designed as an easier-to-use, law-practice-focused alternative for students struggling with the nuances of citation.

Carolyn shares that she is a proponent of the ALWD Guide because it fosters inclusion in the legal-writing classroom by using simple, clear explanations that are easier for international students -- and all students -- to work from.

Jodi Wilson, the president of the association's board wrote to association members,

"Carolyn has been tireless in her work promoting the ALWD Guide, collaborating with [the publisher] Wolters Kluwer, and identifying new ways for the ALWD Guide, and our efforts around it, to serve this community. Through it all, Carolyn has been gracious, energetic, and determined."

Arizona Law's Director of Legal Writing Susie Salmon adds,

"Jodi has repeatedly described Carolyn as a 'force of nature' who 'makes things happen.' Carolyn brought the same traits to her work as the Chair of this committee that she brings to Arizona Law's legal-writing program -- initiative, persistence, and diplomacy -- and connected stakeholders, devised creative solutions, and actively monitored each project until its successful completion."

Congratulations, Carolyn!
